Build resilient relationships that foster collaboration and enable action.

Let needs and values drive the design of your relationship. Your collaboration will prove more resilient to future change and potential conflict.

Relationship Design (RD) will enable you to step into a (business) relationship on the basis of a mutual understanding of needs and expectations instead of on the basis of negotiation positions. You’ll identify and express your individual and shared purpose, values and goals, as well as the anticipated way of working and conflict-resolution strategies. Knowing each other's needs and drivers will enhance clarity between partners and establish a solid foundation for your value-based and conflict-competent collaboration.

Benefits

Gain Clarity & Confidence

Collaborate with confidence. Build your relationship on clarity about your own and your partner’s needs and expectations. Instead of brushing over your goals and negotiating positions, we’ll guide you through an explorative and co-creative process to discover what’s deeper. We apply proven (conflict) mediation techniques, so the focus stays where it matters.

Enable Action

Visual thinking methodologies allow us to converge towards a tangible output, a Relationship Blueprint, that represents the clarity found and commitments made. What is important to you and your (business) partner(s) will be expressed in an easy to read and engaging document. This will enable you to take action and maintain your relationship in the future.

Build Trust & Resilience

The cost of a broken relationship is high, especially in the case of a conflict settled in court. Our process will help you to build trust and handle future conflict in a constructive manner. The ability to resolve tensions when they arise, will save you valuable energy, time and money in the future.

Expert Advice

During the RD process practical questions might arise. We’ll bring in subject matter experts, who will support you to make the best decisions. We collaborate with experts from areas like corporate and family law, tax, finance and accounting, investment management, governance, coaching, etc.

New skills

Throughout the exploration and co-creation process you’ll gain new skills of self-reflection, empathetic listening and creative solution-seeking. These will be of value, not only when establishing the relationship, but also whilst maintaining it.

Human Lawyers

If you need to formalise your agreement, you can avoid the competitive, boiler-plate based, contracting process by working with lawyers from our network. They will integrate the relationship you have designed into legally appropriate contracts, which you’ll be able to read and understand.

How does it work?

The Process

The unique RD process is rooted in two methodologies: Mediation and Visual Thinking.

The purpose of the process is the exploration and co-creation of a well-performing and resilient relationship. Parties express their motivations, needs and concerns to envision and align on the shape their collaboration needs to take. The process provides space for creative conflict and design so that win-win scenarios are developed and trust is built. On average you’ll need 2 - 3 sessions of 1,5 hours to go through the process.

The Output

The output of RD, a Relationship Blueprint, is a tangible and simple expression of what you have uncovered, created and agreed upon together.

It is a tangible representation of your relationship and can in theory take any format suitable. In most cases, it will be a document that summarises the shared purpose, values and goals, the way of working, governance and conflict resolution, as well as agreed upon obligations and rights of each party. It is written in a simple language and enhanced with visual models, so that you are able to read and understand it.

It serves as the foundation you can build your relationship upon.

If needed, in a next step, it can be transformed into a legally binding document (e.g. shareholders agreement, supplier contract, cohabitation contract …).

Relationship Maintenance

Every collaboration and relationship designed with the RD method will receive an annual Relationship Check-up. This is where we go through a simplified RD process  in order to assess whether needs and expectations have changed. If yes, they need to be reflected in your Relationship Blueprint.

Areas of Impact.

We apply Relationship Design in a variety of situations, ranging from business relationships to relationships in the personal and family sphere. We personalise and adapt the focus depending on the unique challenges that different types of relationships pose.

Relationship Design is best suitable for long-term, collaboration- based relationships that:

  • have a high degree of interdependence,

  • operate in a changing context,

  • and run the risk of termination along the way.

Business context:

  • partnerships

  • long-term cooperation

  • supplier relationship

  • business founders

  • investors / financiers

  • management of flexible network(s)

  • tenders

  • franchises

  • governance relations

  • boards

  • family statutes / family business

Personal and family sphere:

  • multi-parent childbearing

  • “Brady Bunch”

  • parenting plans

  • child care arrangements

  • foster care arrangements

  • family statutes / family business

For illustration purposes we have described several application areas of the RD process in the business context. Read below:

Family Businesses

Due to their relationship-based nature family, businesses face specific challenges. On one hand, there is a strong need to establish professional relationships, on the other, it is undeniable that personal and emotional connections will influence what’s happening in the business. RD supports families to explore and express the needs and motivations of all stakeholders. This becomes a base for conversations about plans, ambitions, ways of working, as well as strategies for conflict resolution. The process results in a well-defined and unambiguous family statute that enables all members to take action and contribute to the common vision.

Founders

When starting a new venture with a partner it is necessary to sign a Shareholders Agreement. This agreement will guard the entire collaboration and therefore should not only express the shared vision and goals, but also the needs of each party as well as an established way of working and overcoming of future challenges the relationship will certainly face. RD enables each party to explore and express their needs, and co-creatively develop the base for the collaboration. The process converges into a simple, comprehensive and readable Shareholders Agreement, but most importantly into clarity and alignment between partners.

Procurement

Entering into a long-term and complex contractual agreement with a supplier is always a risk. The agreements that guard these sort of relationships mostly focus on risk reduction. The RD approach draws attention to the purpose of the collaboration and aims at expressing the common goals and objectives in a clear way so that parties are aligned and confident that they are entering a mutually beneficial relationship. Additionally, future challenges are anticipated and a conflict-resolution model agreed upon. As a result parties build trust, increase confidence in the collaboration and can take action with clarity.

Boards

Boards function in highly complex environments. Typically they function on a small number of contact moments and are composed of carefully selected individuals to ensure high-quality decision making. In their function as Board Members, individuals have to find ways to collaborate, cooperate and work cohesively whilst remaining independent and objective. Dynamics in a Board can greatly benefit or tremendously hinder its effectiveness. RD supports Boards by addressing the individual psychological as well as group dynamics. The result is a conflict competent, high-performing board culture.
